Raising A Reader

Studies have shown that a love of reading in children is much more conducive to success in life and in education than wealth, social status, or anything else. Any parent who wishes success for their child should pay special attention to reading, as reading is an important part of healthy brain development and learning skills.

Raising a reader is not difficult. If you are a reader yourself, this will likely be a much easier task, but it is certainly not a requirement. Guide your child into learning about and forming the productive hobby of reading. It isn’t difficult to instill a love of reading in children, as most little ones are born with a natural desire to learn about their world. Reading is the best way to do that.

Get a Library Card

You don’t have to be rich to expose your child to tons of different books. The more kinds of literature you expose them to, the greater the chances of them finding an author or a genre that they will fall in love with. If they have a favorite, they will read more. Libraries are great because they have so many different kinds of books, and helpful librarians and assistants to answer questions and provide resources for you and recommendations for your child.

Read Aloud Together

Your child wants nothing more than to spend time with you, at least in their younger years. Even before they are able to read on their own, spending time together reading is an important part of raising a reader. Many parents like to wind down at night with their little ones by reading aloud from a book or two. 20 to 30 minutes of reading every night will ensure that the two of you get to spend quality time together and that they are exposed to reading on a daily basis.

Set a Good Example

Reading yourself is important. It gives you a chance to learn new things and get away from the stress of life, but it also sets an example for your child. If they see you reading for fun, they will be more inclined to do so. Buy plenty of books and have a place for them in the home so that your entire family will have access to plenty of reading material.
